Miuccia

I know I am not a teenager anymore and should not be so easily star struck anymore, but I couldn’t help but feel a little awe by the fact that I was in the same room as Miuccia Prada today. Granted it was a huge room and I barely saw her as someone in the background drone on and on about ebitda with an Italian blur. But still. She was there! The genius who brought back the house of Prada and created Miu Miu (one of the many loves of my life! I even felt a tiny hint of pride when I found out that Miu Miu was the fastest growing brand they had outstripping even Prada itself. I have good taste!)

You have to admit, Miuccia is pretty cool (Hey, at least I am not raving about Justin Beaver here!). I tried explaining how cool this was to the guys around me, but they did not appear to appreciate the situation much. Hello? It’s the female equivalent of seeing Rafael Nadal in real life!

Oh and I was super happy with the gift bag too. We were expecting either nothing or a small keychain, but instead we all got a Prada leather folder/sleeve! My colleague pointed out the fact that they are giving one to everyone must mean that their leather goods seriously don’t cost much to make in the first place. I don’t think I will dwell too much on that though. Personally I don’t even associate Prada with leather goods (mostly nylon goods).Besides, there must be a reason why leather good is their major return driver after all.

Let Uggs be Uggs

Manolos, Louboutins, Roger Viviers, I love them all. But out of all the shoe brands in that price bucket, I’ve never been a big fan of Jimmy Choo.

Their latest collaboration with Uggs certainly does not endear them to me anymore. I’ve finally accepted that Uggs are going to be around for a while, but please, let Uggs be Uggs. Please do not bedazzle them, stick the Jimmy Choo brand name on it and charge a premium. At the price tag they charge, you’d think Jimmy Choo would be a bit more original than that.

Fish or Peacock?

I’m lazy this year. So instead of the full get up, I decided to wear a mask.

Initially, I thought that I could finally use the mask I got from Venice. But then my cousin told me I looked like a fish wearing it….. and so I got my friend M to help me get this.

Except now I’m a bit concerned about the peacock feathers. I didn’t quite expect there to be so much of it! What will I wear it with? I DO love the silver sequins and the blue feathers though. I’m tempted to cut the feathers off…. but then the point of Halloween IS to be over the top. Unfortunately, in my hurry to leave work today, I left the mask at the office, so I can’t play around with it tonight. Thoughts?

Black Magic

Update: It arrived!!!!! I love the jacket!!!! Though I’m debating about the dress. The black jersey top half and the off white mesh is not really well done. But the poof IS just the right length.

*****

It has been a long time since I actually found something that I know for sure that I absolutely want. So I thought I’d share.

Isn’t this black magic tweed jacket from Plastic Island absolutely darling? I love how it is ladylike and punk at the same time. They really hit the spot with the metal details. I totally see myself rocking this jacket this fall with skinny jeans and heels or a black dress.

In fact, I’m tempted to get the noir cocktail dress as well to go with it! The poof of the skirt goes perfectly with the length of the jacket. What if I don’t find something similar elsewhere? The only thing keeping me back is the back of the dress. Yes it is very trendy and hot. But frankly, I don’t have a bra to go with that and at the end of the day I’m an old fashion girl at heart. But perhaps I don’t have to take my jacket off at all….  and if I do, I can wear a white racer tank underneath. It does look like a very versatile dress, going from prim and punk to wild and fun with a switch of a fur jacket.

But ooooh I can’t wait to receive my jacket!

With Love…From London

Forget about scenic postcards. Next time you’re in London, get me one of these as a souvineer- LuLu Guiness clutches!

This postcard clutch  is infinitely more useful and chic. It even says London on it! You can’t get more touristy than that. There are many compartments too! Though my cousin has it, and she tells me that she can’t fit much in because it is so thin- just her  iPhone and a few essentials.

I’m usually not a fan of blatant displays of souvenirs (i.e. though shalt not wear your I heart NYC t shirt out in public). But, I think this Union Jack clutch  is subtle enough. The sequins glams it up, don’t you agree?

Not quite as nice as the two clutches above, but this cab clutch is still quite fun. Imagine the cheesy jokes! “Let me grab my cab”

We’re veering a bit away from souvenirs but isn’t this lip clutch so cool? It doesn’t say London as the others do, but it screams London punk fashion.

While we’re on the topic of clutches, I really wouldn’t mind this one either. It would do so well  on a night out. And check out that lining!

So yes, the next time you drop by London, pick up one of these. There’s a flagship store somewhere, but FYI they also have a good size collection at the basement of Harrods- right next to the tax counter!

Matchy Matchy

Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve  had a thing for matchy matchy pajamas. During college, when everyone else was walking around the dorm in oversized t-shirts and shorts, I was wandering around in matching “Chicks Rule” pjs from Target. So imagine my delight when I came across Peter Alexander, at Center Point in Sydney. A whole store devoted to girly matchy matchy pjs!

Not so much an animal lover myself, I immediately gravitated towards these two pajama sets, with the multitude of bows and pink stripes. Oh the choices! In the end, I settled for the bow prints, since I thought they were more special and unique than stripes. Though I’m mighty tempted to stop by Peter Alexander before I leave and pick up the pink stripe set as well. The bows on either side of the pockets are too cute!

I am also loving these pants full of charms. Though I’m not too hot about the t shirt. I think it’ll look better with this super soft pink waffle Henley I also picked up from PA.

They are quite creative when it comes to their night dresses as well. I really like this daisy print over sized shirt dress. Unfortunately, they ran out of the waffle leggings that are supposed to go with it, and I’m all about matchy matchy. I also think that this drape printed t shirt is quite interesting, because it made me take a second glance. From the thumbnail, I thought it was actually draped!

If there is one store in Sydney that I would like to empty out, I think Peter Alexander is it!

I’m a Bridesmaid!

Update: Thanks for all the comments! In the end, I put forth the cream Alberta Ferretti dress and the blue Carmen Marc Valvo dress for the vote. Rest assure, we are going to get the one we choose made in a champagne color that will not clash with the bride’s.

We haven’t done the vote yet, but the competition looks tough. There are some pretty strong competitions from styles that the other bridesmaid’s have posted. I shall keep you updated on the progress!

*****

Marriage has always been something I’ve thought of in the distant future. But maybe it isn’t so distant after all. Recently, people I know just keep on getting engaged! The first one to tie the knot, is my high school friend C, whom I’ve known since we were 12. HG and I are going to be part of her bridal party in October. One of our first tasks, is to come up with bridesmaid dresses.

After doing some preliminary window shopping, we’ve narrowed it down to 2 things:

  1. The length of our dresses should be the same. We agreed that for this wedding, floor length would be most elegant
  2. We will go with a creamish brown color to compliment all the different colors of the bride’s dresses and to go with the chocolate theme

For the rest, we decided to each do some research to find a suitable style and reconvene later to do a vote on which one to get made. Here is my research:

To compliment all body shapes, I thought that maybe this very simple and demure dress by Alberta Ferretti might be a good option. Though I do worry that it might turn out matronly.

Ok, this red Armani is a bit va va voom. But I was thinking maybe something similar, (in our color of course) with a less v neckline?

Being quite flat-chested myself, I’m not a fan of strapless dresses (I worry that it might fall off and I won’t even notice!). Thinking outside of the box, I thought, why not one shoulder gowns? They are trendy right now, and they won’t fall off! I’m loving this elegant one shoulder dress from Carmen Marc Valvo.

But then this one by Theia is so pretty too- especially the flower!

And what about this one from Aidan Mattox? The neckline is like a half halter and the sleeves is kind of interesting.

I can only recommend 2 of these dresses above to the bridal party as my choices. The question is, which one? Let’s do a preliminary round of votes here first!

Temple of Balenciaga

02 Monday Aug 2010

The other day I mentioned that I was going to visit the temple of Balenciaga aka the flagship store in Paris on 10, avenue George V. Well, it was a good thing I copied down the address properly, because I nearly missed it.

I nearly thought it was renovating and left, because all I saw was the huge Balenciaga ad next door from a distance. It turns out that the flagship store is indeed opened. It’s just that the only sign that indicates the flagship store is the many Balenciaga bags sitting by the window. Talk about discrete!

On a mission I headed straight for the clutches and with the help of the SA went over and over again the drawers that hold the envelop clutches (they don’t like it when you try to go through the drawers yourself!). I’d had my heart set on a beige or grey colored one, but sadly they really didn’t have that many colors. Instead of a battle between which one to get, it was more of a process of elimination and I quickly picked out the color that I liked most out of the lot. This blue storm color is probably the closest to grey I’m going to get. Luckily, I have a lot of blue clothes so I am currently loving it!
Determined for something beige, I took a look at the rest of the bags. But alas, the closest it came was a huge beige part time or a chestnut colored covered city. I hear that there are more choices in NYC. The only good thing about getting it in its motherland is that it truly is cheaper than it is anywhere else. With the tax refund, it is at least 13% cheaper. Who knows how much more it will be with the falling euro!
But Balenciaga fans beware. You are only allowed 2 bags per person per season. This applies to all Balenciaga stores in Paris (I checked with the counter at Lafayette too). Clearly they are not desperate for business and frankly, you can tell. Even though they were perfectly polite, I’ve never encountered such snobby and condescending SAs before. Not even at Louis Vuitton, Chanel or Hermes, where they have reason to be with the great flood of tourists there all the time. As much as I love my bags, I don’t think I’ll be visiting this flagship store again the next time I come back. It is totally not worth the cab fare. I can get my seasonal dosage of Balenciaga at the Lafayette counter with a lot less attitude.

I’ve been feeling a bit blogged out this week. But that is because I’ve been spending time with my aqua Varina flats.

I debated between the aqua and the cornflower blue, but in the end I decided on aqua simply because it was the first to catch my eye. It is a lovely color isn’t it?
