Smooth Talkers

I just wanted to say kudos to the Wall Street CEO’s (and their strategists). You got to admire how they handled themselves under the rapid fire at Capitol Hill yesterday. They were calm, smart, logical and amiable. We can all learn a lot just by watching!

Lesson number one. When asked a tough question, get nit picky with the details. When asked about the government loan to Citi and whether Citi expects to profit 100% from the upside while making the government share 90% of the downside, Pandit responded by getting really precise about the numbers and insisting that this arrangement is like an insurance. When the parliament member said that insurance was not mentioned in the documents, Pandit admitted not having enough time to read the documents properly since it was given to him over lunch (another smart move). And then time was up! I thought he played that out really well and he was actually very amiable throughout the whole grilling too!

When Pandit and Dimon were asked whether they were deliberately reducing loan in Michigan, because it was really hard to get a loan there these days, they both fell back on the general rules and said that they were not discriminating the State and that everything is treated on a case by case basis. This was very suave and diplomatic. If it were me, I would be tempted to point out that banks are now following a more stringent lending policy (as well they should) and citizens of Michigan are probably finding it hard to get loans because they don’t meet the qualifications, which is not surprising given the current state of the Michigan economy. The parliament complains about banks taking TARP money and not using it to lend money, but there is such a thing as lending responsibly.

Another important lesson is standing up and simply admitting that you made a mistake a la John Mack.

“I think the entire industry bears responsibility, and I’m sorry for it”

This is probably one of the oldest lessons of all, but it works every time. You got to admire someone (esp a banker) who will stand up and admit that he made a mistake and apologize on national TV. Morgan Stanley stocks went up!

The neatest trick of all though, is how they can go on for a long time talking very intelligently like they know what they’re saying, trying to be very cooperative and helpful, but at the end of the day, the audience is left wondering whether they were too dumb to understand what was just said, or whether their question was actually answered.  They are all such incredibly smooth talkers! I wish I knew how to do that.

It is no wonder that they are paid between $600,000 to $1.5 million a year in salary alone (not including bonus) to do their job. As for the whole public anger etc over the exorbitant salary/bonus that Wall Street recieves, I’m of the camp that people don’t go into finance to save the world (those people are called doctors). Besides, if you calculated how much they’re actually earning by the hour, you’ll realize that the regular banker is not really earning that much more than the rest of us. Considering how much tedious work they have to do to just put a pitch book together, I’d say they need their bonus.

Valentine’s for Her

The other day, I was helping my guy friend pick out a vday/anniversary gift for his girlfriend. He wanted to get her something nice and special…. “like a dress or something pretty and useful like that.” It’s a nice thought, but you’d think that after 7 years, he’d have learnt the basic gift picking rule for girls.

Thou shalt not buy her items of clothing unless otherwise specified and you have been equipped with a picture, color and size.

It never occurred to him that she wouldn’t like what he picked out for her, but then she’d have to tell him she likes it anyway, and then be forced to wear it out in public so she won’t hurt his feelings before banishing it to the back of her closet. This is probably where I should come in, but did I mention that I’ve never met her before and therefore have no idea what her style is? After steering him safely away from the clothing section, we ended up back on the first floor of Neimans. I suggested skincare that she usually uses (he did say useful!) or some pretty accessories like a scarf, cute ear muffs or a simple clutch. Unfortunately they’d already cleaned out the winter stuff and all that was left that was pretty and useful were sunglasses. Against my better judgment, he bought her a pair of oversized Marc by MJ shades. I did my best to point him towards the most classic pair that looks like it would be versatile (I really have no experience picking shades for anyone else but myself, you really got to try it on!), but I’m sure it will be better then what he would’ve picked up since they “all look the same.” I told him to keep the receipt.

vday-coach

Wanting to get your girlfriend something useful is all very well and good, but useful is a refill for her skincare routine or a gift certificate to Bloomies. Useful is not pretty or romantic. Cute little trinklets and jewelry were invented to be pretty, not useful. But I definitely don’t mind a cute trinklet like the Coach keychains above. They’d look pretty carrying my keys or dangling around on my bag! And if your girlfriend doesn’t like what you picked out, at least it is a relatively small thing and it wouldn’t take up too much wardrobe space. Besides, it’s the thought that counts. The whole idea is just to get her a little something to show her your love and so that later on she can be reminded of the moment, no? (The above keychains have been arranged from being really lovey dovey to just cute depending on taste.)

If you really want to strive for useful, I think a classic bag like the hobo style Coach above (right) or a simple clutch (above left and right), can’t go too wrong either.

vday-tiffany

HG reminded me of another good place for Vday gift on her blog– Tiffany’s. How could I forget? They even sort it out for you on their website according to the level of your relationship! I am loving their soft pink accessories. The simple pink heart would make a lovely phone chain. The beaded pink bracelet would be a cute compliment to an outfit. I wish I’d seen this pink ring before, because my friend was looking for a ‘promise ring’ the other month and I think this one would’ve been perfect! And I love the design of this necklace, it’s pretty and elegant but not too typical Tiffany’s.

If you want to be even more thoughtful in your gift giving? Buy a gorgeous jewelry box and put the trinklet/jewelry inside. I guarantee you that she’ll love it. I suggested this to three guy friends last year and all their girlfriends loved it. I should’ve gotten commission for that. If you’re in Hong Kong, they sell some very exquisite and beautiful jewelry boxes in the Lane Crawford home store in Pacific Place that looks like it belongs to royalty back in the days.

Ladies, feel free to forward this to your significant other as a hint hint 😉

The Reykjavik Muffler

Feeling bored the other day, I stalked my friend’s Facebook pictures and noticed that her scarf looked really pretty. I instantly knew from the picture that it was a cashmere Vuitton scarf.

vuitton-reykjavik-muffler-4

After a little research I confirmed that it was the Vuitton Reykjavik Muffler (I was also right about the 100% cashmere part). I must admit, if I had only saw this picture of the scarf (left), I wouldn’t have given it a second thought. It looks like any old Vuitton scarf with it’s logo plastered all over. But what they don’t show you on the web (and they really should) is how one side is the reverse of the other (see right for a better illustration for what I’m trying, and failing, to describe). The black/white color contrast further sharpens this effect. It is the one redeeming quality of this scarf that makes me love it instead of hate it. Instead of a walking Vuitton advertisement, the flowers and logo suddenly looks refreshing, playful and cute! It is by no means subtle, but at least the contrast and the size of the logos differentiate it from the regular Vuitton monogram *yawn*. And as long as you don’t wear it with a mongrammed Vuitton bag or printed anything, this would be a great accessory to liven up the rest of the dreary winter.

vuitton-mahina-knit-scarf1

If you DO like your outfit printed though, I like this Mahina knit scarf as an alternative. The monograms are very subtly perforated (read punched) into the scarf, so effectively it is a black scarf, which you can match with anything. But to the observant and those in the know, we all know that this scarf is special. It is not 100% cashmere, but with some lurex and silk in the mix, I’m sure it’ll feel just as divine. It will probably even make it pass winter and into the summer as a shawl for a cold night!

I’m usually not a Vuitton girl (not for scarves anwyay), but maybe it is time to reassess my initial perceptions. Not that I’m going to run out and buy one, but oh, it is nice to pretend.

A Random Encounter

Dear London Writer,

I just wanted to say thank you for following me into Neiman Marcus the other night and chatting me up. Your pick up line was a bit cliche, but it totally worked. I did indeed felt very chic and stylish walking down Michigan Avenue in my black trench coat, maroon tights and knee length brown wedge boots. I too thought my white ear muffs look very cute. Your compliment made it almost worth it for me to freeze my legs off in the cold in order to wear my skirt and maroon tights.

I liked how you went straight to the point and addressed your creepy behavior before I even realized what was going on. Indeed, I initially thought you were some ‘modelling agency scout’ out to scam me, a charity representative trying to get me to donate money/sign up for something or a stranger asking for directions. I was actually flattered by your “surprise” when I admitted that I don’t get chatted up on the streets by random guys very often (make that never).  I know, I am a sucker for empty flattery.

I also admired how smooth and confident you were. You completely carried on the conversation by yourself, making smooth transitions between topics, leading it to where you want it to and requiring the minimum effort out of me. There were not even any awkward silences! “Oh you’re from London? (that is probably why my trench coat caught his eye- it was like a hello from the motherland!), yes I’m working here, yes it is really cold out there (the classsic conversation filler), oh you are a writer? Aren’t you a bit too young to be?, yes I love to travel… blah blah”. It was nice, brainless banter. You also successfully made yourself sound very wordly and cool when you started talking about your friends from all over, traveling around for your writing etc etc. It almost made me curious about you and take your bate when you started asking about cool places to go to/hang out at in Chicago.

But alas, my mom’s edict about talking to strangers started drumming in my head, so I not-so-discretely looked down at my phone clock pretending that I was late to meet someone (which is actually the truth. That someone just happened to be late!). I’m impressed by how quickly you took the hint and made a graceful exit. That was possibly the most non-awkward potentially-awkward conversation with a stranger I’ve ever had. So even though I was probably not the most friendly or receptive participant, know that the exchange brought a smile to my face. I will probably not recognize you should I ever meet you again (I have facial recognition issues), but I will definitely watch out for a random young London author the next time I go to the bookstore (even though it will be difficult since I don’t even know your first name).

Best of Luck,

BG

Ps. To other random guys on the street: don’t try this if you are not at least decent looking  or half as smooth and charming.

Pps. This is NOT one of those random blog posts/craig lists posts to look for random strangers that people “connected” with on the train from an exchange of glances

Tea with BG

That’s what I usually say to my girl friends (and guy friends if they’re willing) when I want to get together and catch up. We get to sit in nice and peaceful environment, where we can actually hear each other without shouting. We have scones and little finger food for substanence and a constant supply of refreshments when we get thirsty. We can go on for hours and hours without disruption! It is the best time and place to really chat and bond with each other. That is how I envisualize Tea with BG to be. A place where I can share my thoughts about every interesting tidbit I encounter everyday with my friends both online and off.

You might ask why I’m starting a new blog when this is kind of what I was doing on I am Fashion already. I guess the biggest difference would be the structure, the range of topics,  and the tone. I am Fashion was a girly blog where we shared our fashion observations in a fun and light tone accompanied by lots of pictures. HG & I worked hard to make sure that it was regularly updated at least 5-6 times a week. After 4 years, that has become what I am Fashion is, and what we and our readers expect of it. But as much as I love fashion, I do have other interests I’d like to talk about as well. And as I step into the twenties and the real world, the demands on my time, my writing style and the way I view the world has also changed. I may not have as much time to surf the net, collect images and write a lot on a daily basis anymore. Indeed, my writing may not even warrant as many images as it used to. My tone may also not be as cheerful and lighthearted as it used to be (the real world does this to people). Nevertheless, I still enjoy blogging. So instead of trying to mold I am Fashion into something new (we love it too much to want to change it), we decided to let it go and start something new of our own, which we can shape to better fit who we are today.

So here I am at Tea with BG, and I hope that you will stop by from time to time to visit. I don’t promise to update daily, but I’ll try my best not to be remiss and disappear without a word for more than a week (maybe I should start an email chain for updates or a RSS feed- once I figure out how to?). I have written a few posts as a prelude to what will come. Obviously, there will still be fashion posts sprinkled in with some random musings. I’m still working on the banner. I love the tea set because it is so me and it fits with the theme, but my friends tell me that it looks a bit like a food blog. So I blended in a random image of NYC to give it a city feel, can you see the lights of the office building on top left and the sign of E 58th St on the right? I’m still not 100% happy with it, but it will have to do for now until a better inspiration comes to me.

I hope you like Tea with BG and I’d love to hear what you think and any suggestions you have either in the comments or by email at teawithbg AT gmail. Don’t be shy!

xoxo

How to be B

Gossip Girl

From the very first episode, I knew that I was stylistically enslaved by the Queen B. There is something  just so feminine and ladylike but still youthful about her style, that I so love and aspire to.

so-blair-2

At first, I contented myself with a Jennifer Oullette headband (or two), accepting that I simply cannot afford to match her full gear nor expect myself to carry it off (seriously, those pencil skirts she favor are not as forgiving on everyone as it is on her).

so-blair-41

But after having obsessively observed her for 2.5 seasons, it finally hit me just how simple and achievable her outfits really are (am I just slow?). The most important part is “the base” from which her look is built from. It is usually a pretty, ultra feminine silk blouse tucked into a gorgeous just-above-the-knee skirt. If the silk top is adorned enough, like her ruffled white shirt here from the “Realm of the Basses,” then it is better to keep it clean and simple.

so-blair-1

This also goes for when the shirt/skirt is already printed/vibrant enough to carry it’s own weight. The simple but vibrant aqua and purple combo here (left) is an excellent example.

Sometimes though to make the base more interesting and youthful, she pairs the it with a bright cardigan (center) or a printed blazer (right).

so-blair-3

And of course, B accessorizes. We all know about the bright headbands. Frankly, those have been a bit overdone by now and you’ll notice that B wears it less often these days. But when she does wear them, make note that she has switched in her thick banded Jennifer Oullette ones in exchange for thinner headbands. Personally I’m glad, because thin headbands sit so much better on my head than the thick ones (I was beginning to think that my head is deformed).

Besides the headband, during the winter, B also plays around with tights. The green tights (second set of pictures down) were awful, but I think she carries off the white tights well. For myself though, I will probably end up looking like a little kid coming home from ballet, so I’m going to stick with black tights.

A neat trick in B’s armory for accessorizing (from my observation) is how she picks a bright color (usually red), and matches her accessories accordingly, which really adds a put together “pop” quality to her outfit. Witness how she pairs her red bag with red flats and headband (left), her red Dior bag with her red lipsticks (right) and her red Valentino bag (I love!) with the red on her plaid blazer (third set of pictures down on the right). Simple but effective!

Here I thought I was just geekily obsessed with my email. But If Becky Quick is right, and the secret to success begins with an empty email inbox, then it sounds like I will soon be tea-ing with the likes of Jamie Dimon and Warren Buffet instead. Do you prefer your tea with milk or sugar gentlemen?

Vegas and our Inner Sluts

01 Sunday Feb 2009

The other weekend I went to Vegas. I haven’t been since I was 10. It really is different when you’re going with friends and you’re actually legal to participate in all that Vegas has to offer: namely the gambling, the drinking and the clubbing. Not that I’m super into any of these three things- my primary vice is shopping- but when in Rome, you do what the Romans do.

Compared to the sub zero temperature back in Chicago, stepping out of the Las Vegas airport and into the warm sunny breeze, felt a little like stepping into Saks after a jaunt at Marshalls. Everything just seems brighter and better. I immediately discarded my bulky layers for a bright breezy top and a leather biker jacket (yes, I finally found the perfect one!), and whipped out my big shades.

The Strip was a hodgepodge of fashion. It was as if they picked a few representatives from all around and put them in Vegas.  There was the west coast girl from next door in her shorts, spaghetti straps and flip flops. There was the woman from the suburbs somewhere in the light washed denim jacket and matching jeans.  And the teenager in her UGGs. Basically anything goes. There is no local dress mode or concept of weather, which I guess makes sense since everyone on the strip are tourists. That is only in the day time though.

snv346302

As the sun goes down, the crowd starts to change. You start seeing flocks of girls walking around all dressed in black. Waiting in line at Tao, the night club located at the Venetian, I got a better look. The dress code seems to be skanky black dresses with ridiculously high heels. Indeed, if you look up the dance floor onto the balcony above where the ladies bathroom is located (I’m convinced that they deliberately designed it that way so people below can look up their skirts!), you will see a line of similarly dressed girls waiting, forming a fashion show of scanty black dresses. Perhaps there is a store in Vegas that specializes in variations of the barely-there black dresses. They were all very low cut and super short too. I knew that the Vegas style is all about the bling, the sparkly and the obvious, but this was a bit beyond my imagination. I have seen my share of scanty outfits, but never in such a big concentration. Most vividly, I remember seeing a girl in a super short black dress that was completely backless……. some girls may be able to carry this off, but in this case (as with most) it was waay too much skin- even for the boys!  I wish I’d taken a quick picture, but alas, even if I had it will probably not be appropriate to post. I wonder why everyone dresses so. To compete with the almost naked girls frolicking in the famous tubs of Tao? Or maybe Vegas is the just place where everyone lets their inner sluts out.

mango-top

As for me, I wore this black sequins top that I’d recently bought at Mango just for this occasion, with jeans and heels. I figured it would go with the whole glittery, glam theme. Obviously I don’t have much of an inner slut in me. Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against showing a little skin. I get that it is the thing to do in Vegas. I just cannot let go of a lifetime of a certain type of style by just being in Vegas. Call me conventional, but no matter where I am, I still believe that skin should be tastefully shown. i.e. one at a time. This is probably why I like the uniform of the waitresses at the Bellagio best. While all the dealers/waitresses at other casino hotels wear outfits that leaves little to the imagination, the waitresses at the Bellagio pairs their short shorts that shows off their incredible legs, with a long sleeved black blazer, which balances it out.

Having said all that, the next morning I pulled out black lace tights from my suitcase and paired it with my mini sweater dress and bejeweled belt. One of my guy friends threw me weird look and told me I looked like a slut. That’s what my family told me too when I modeled my outfit for them (I guess they didn’t see the Chanel FW08 runway). But what the hell, I’m in Vegas.

A Word for the DABA Girls

01 Sunday Feb 2009

The DABA girls have been under a lot of public attack lately since their article in the New York Times came out. People started in on them for being spoilt, unfeeling, gold diggers when they realize that it wasn’t a satire. Then they called them a fraud for making up this nether universe, out to garner a sweet book deal.

Frankly, I don’t really care if it is a satire or not. If it is, than good for them. They were smart enough to capitalize on this environment and I’ll probably buy their book. As for decieving the New York Times, maybe it is to keep up with their guise.  I can appreciate a good marketing technique.

If it is not, then I can see why many people would think they are spoilt gold diggers. But lifestyle is a personal choice, and I don’t judge how others choose to live their’s. It may seem unfair that they got to reap all the rewards of their FBF’s hardwork when the economy was good, but if their FBF’s love them and want to share it with them, then why should we care? Life isn’t exactly fair. The point however is that everyone’s “norm” is different, and that deviating from the norm is painful for everyone. Perhaps living without their Amex for the DABA girls is like us living without our water supply. If one day, god forbid, my home water supply stopped working, I will probably survive, but you may be sure that I will complain a LOT about it (and I daresay, many of you will as well). That sounds like a ridiculous comparison, but just think of the people out there without a water supply system that delivers directly to their homes. Besides, as they said, this blog is for other DABA girls to share their experiences with each other, an outlet for their troubles. Clearly it was not meant to be taken so seriously by the rest of the world.

Personally, I am just grateful to the DABA girls for providing me with such a delightful diversion from work. Their tales about how the recession is affecting their relatinships with their FBFs are interesting, witty, light and funny- a cross between Leveraged Sellout and what I imagine a Sex and the City column would be like. I loved the quip about their soles not surviving the midwest suburbs!

If something is good and I enjoy it, I try not to question the how’s and the why’s and just continue to enjoy it. I’m sorry to hear about L’s job and D’s relationship. Hopefully your book deal will work out. Though you might want to diversify your topics a bit if you really are working on a book. One can only handle so much of the same story over and over again.

Keep up the good work ladies!
