Oxblood from Aqua

When I first heard that oxblood was the new thing, I thought “ugh, that sounds like the most un-appealing color ever. Like poop brown.” Apparently, it is just another name for maroon. Maybe just a shade or two lighter. Even though it is my school color (and indeed mascot, if a color can be a mascot), I’ve never liked maroon much. It just felt old. But since then, I’ve clearly been brainwashed by the recent onset of oxblood goods. On second thought, it may be just the right shade to go with all the blacks/grays of the season!

So I headed to Aqua from Bloomingdales to check out what they have on offer. It’s one of my favourite brands to go to off-sale season, as they’re always on trend and relatively affordable. In combination with well timed friends and family discount, the value is unbeatable!

When I saw the strapless red/silver dress, I knew I had to have it. It is just so pretttty and perfect for my upcoming birthday! It totally says birthday dress all over it. Plus, on non-birthday days, I can throw a leather jacket over it and get a rocker chic look (as the model does in their look book!). Alas, it was too warm on my birthday to wear a leather jacket. But it looked fabulous anyway! The material was a little flimsier than I expected from the pictures, but it worked out well as that (and the somewhat dizzying print) made it easier to DIY alter without anyone noticing.

As I was browsing, I also came across the red v necked dress, which I thought was the perfect addition to my winter wardrobe. Just to spice it up a bit. Imagine the red peeking out from underneath my black winter trench. Very Kate Middleton! I had concerns about the elastic waist looking cheap, but it is not anything a nice wide belt won’t fix. But alas, I was still disappointed with the actual dress when I got it. It was WAY flimsier than I expected. A winter colored summer dress. Maybe I should’ve read the fine print more carefully. Now I’m just trying to wear it as much as possible before it gets too told. It works well with a belt and black blazer.

Other items that caught my eye include the red leather dress and the red skinny jeans. I’m just not sure how comfortable a leather dress would be (how do people even wear leather skinnys???). As for the red skinny jeans, it is love. But I don’t buy denim online without trying them on, unless they are J Brand.

Eye and mind candy

While we don’t have the Art Institute in Hong Kong, we do have art exhibits every few months to feast the eyes and stimulate the mind. This month, we have Fine Art Asia. The mandate for the exhibit is quite wide, ranging from ancient bronze, antique furniture and jewelry to contemporary art and installations. They even have a few Rembrandts and Monet!

I thought the exhibit was rather refreshing (and I’ve been to many in the last years). Since it was much smaller in scale than Art HK (and had much less people), I was able to actually take the time and really appreciate the pieces on display, and find the ones that I connected with (Art HK kind of blows your mind with the sheer amount of art on display).

20121003-183103.jpg

Since it is Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day this week, I have quite a few friends visiting from out of town. At their requests, we agreed to go to Lamma for the day, to chill and eat seafood. Ironically, the friend who suggested Lamma to begin with dropped out the last minute. But because my mind had been conditioned to go to Lamma today, me and my remaining friend went anyway.

We started off at the Yung Shue Wan end of the island, where we explored the little village there (quite cute!), and slowly made our way to Sok Ku Wan, on the other end of the island where the famous seafood restaurants are. All my friends had assured me that it was an easy hike that can be done with flats. 2 hours of hiking and half heartedly kite flying later, I’m glad I changed into flip flops and saved my flats. By that time it was 6:30pm. The perfect time to have an early seafood dinner at the rows of outdoor restaurants lining the waterfront next to the pier. Apparently everyone else thought so too. We couldn’t find a seat anywhere for the 2 of us!

We decided to head back to civilization for food. Except the line for the ferry going back to Central was endless. We ended up waiting half a hour to get on the ferry going to Aberdeen instead. We were so glad we got there early . Lots of people behind us didn’t manage to get on the boat. The ferry was a bit more ghetto than the one we came in (that one was wifi enabled!), but I was comforted with the fact that Hong Kong is super safe and modern (I’ve never heard of a boating accident in Hong Kong before), and they wouldn’t let it be in operation otherwise. There isn’t even a typhoon! We arrived safely less than half a hour later, and made our way to dinner. I must say, I’m secretly glad there wasn’t any space for us at the restaurants in Lamma. I seriously don’t see how seafood can be much fresher than what I get in the city. There is a humongous power station on the island for heavens sake! The outdoor seating area also did not look appetizing…. I shudder to think what goes on inside the kitchen. I was much more comfortable back in civilization, where my friend and I enjoyed a nice and relaxed dinner indoors.

We called it an early night after that. We were exhausted. And so, I was sitting on my bed surfing the net when my mom came home admonishing me for not picking up the phone while I was out for dinner. At first I was annoyed. Sometimes people just don’t hear the phone (and I don’t even remember seeing a missed call!)! But now I feel guilty and a bit chilled to the bones. Apparently, there was a boat collision off Lamma island tonight. 120 people were thrown overboard, and up until now, 100 people were rescued but at least 8 have died.

My initial thought that my mom was overreacting. I was far away from the island by then. There was nothing to worry about. But then, the more I watched the reports on it, the more chilled I felt. I WAS JUST THERE. The island was overflowing with children . The victims may have been any number of the people I passed by earlier today. In fact, I distinctively remember seeing a Power Asset flag (the company of the boat that sank) at the peripheral of my vision. Through a few twists of fate, IT COULD’VE BEEN ME! I rarely take a boat, and Hong Kong never has such serious boating accidents. Out of all the days and all the boats in Hong Kong, the collision happened less than 2 hours after I was there! There wasn’t even much wind or wave this evening. It just came out of the blue!! If there had been a table, we would’ve been leaving the island at just that time!

Most of the time, I feel like life is what I make it out to be. But on occasions like this, it just strikes me how fragile life is, and how so much of it actually depends on the whims of fate. A chilling and unsettling thought. My heart goes out to the victims and families of this tragic accident.

Amazing acupuncture!

I twisted my ankle a few weeks ago while training for the 10k. Ironic, since I was consciously trying to correct my running posture (landing on the ball of my foot with a slight hunch, and pretending that the wind is in my back). I thought I’d just let it rest for a few days, elevating it whenever possible (a girl cannot do without her heels for long!). But it was clearly not working after two weeks, as the same area kept  bothering me when I trained.

Since I was pretty sure that all my family doctor was going to do was tell me to continue elevating my foot  (and potentially giving me a Hurodoid-like ointment), I decided to try my luck with a Chinese doctor. Apparently, I had a swollen tendon that was slowly extending up the small of my leg. She initially rubbed some ointment on me, and tried to massage it out (and by massage, I mean violently rubbing, pushing and turning my foot here and there). When that did not work to ease my discomfort (and indeed, may have added to it), she resorted to acupuncture. I was freaked out! The idea of having needle stuck in my foot (or anywhere on my person for that matter) just doesn’t sit well with me. When I was a little girl, I had to be held down to get a shot. To this day, one of my primary school friends still love talking about the time I ran and hid from a shot at school once (I so do not recall this). So you can imagine how I feel about  needles being stuck in my foot for an indefinite period of time *swoon*.

But since I’ve already come so far, I couldn’t let the violent shaking be for nothing. So, I forged ahead, clutching my Kindle in front of my face. If you can’t see, then it won’t hurt as much right? As I felt the needle penetrate my skin, I braced myself for excruciating pain… but instead, it felt a little less than getting a blood sample. I kept expecting more pain to come, as the needles “settle in,” but it was blessedly numb.

When I put my foot down to test the results afterwards, it was incredible. It was as if the needles have indeed “released” the swelling from my foot, and the discomfort that has been bothering me for weeks have magically disappeared! Barring a delicate sensation, which I think it purely psychological, I was as good as new and ready to jump. Who knew that acupuncture is so amazing???

Silly things I do: Bitter Chocolate

Ever since my mom started seeing a dietrician, she has been eating a piece of 85% dark chocolate every night because a little bit of cocoa everyday is appparently good for the heart. Which is good news for me, since after two decades of milk chocolate, I have finally acquired a taste for the darker side. So when she passed around the bar of dark chocolate last night, I unhesitatingly popped a piece in my mouth… and stopped. In her zeal to strengthen her heart, she’d taken it one step further and bought 99% chocolate.

It’s like drinking sparkling water. You expect it to taste like sprite but it doesn’t. Except this is worse, because instead of nothing, there is bitterness disguised in the luxe texture of chocolate. My parents had a really good laugh out, as they watched me jump off the couch and run for water (could it be a ploy to get me off the couch?).

It is definitely one of the most memorable chocolate I’ve ever had… one that I’ll remember to avoid!

My ribs are bruised

That’s how it feels like anyway. I know that it is likely the after shock of utilizing dormant muscles, but I went to the bathroom to check anyway. Just to be sure I didn’t actually bruised my ribs – I didn’t. It is indeed just the by product of doing crunches correctly.

After much consideration and empty talking, I finally joint the gym a few weeks ago. Mostly because one of the things on my list of  30 things to do before I’m 30 is to run a half marathon (and time is starting to run out!). I thought I was already being realistic to my level doing half, but when I told my boss (who is a runner) that I wanted to run a half marathon he laughed and asked me if I knew how far that was. Apparently it is 21K. I immediately flashed back to the time when I walked a 10K in Auckland and how afterwards my friend and I laid paralyzed on her couch for the remainder of the day… ok so maybe a half marathon in 3 months is pushing it. So I signed up for the 10K race in November (in about 2.5 months time). It’s all about setting realistic goals for yourself, and building up to it right?

Well, turns out after the initial assessment, my trainer doesn’t even think I can finish running a 10K race. Probably because I feel lightheaded and super out of breath after a 20 minute run at a moderate rate (she calls it, fast walking). It’s not even because I don’t eat or am dehydrated. It just happens as I cool down. Probably because of all the blood rushing into my head afterwards. Supposedly it gets better with time… though I have my doubts.

Anyway, in addition to all that, I also have no muscle strength … well anywhere on my physique. When I try to do sit ups, I end up tiring out my neck, cause I have no strength in my abdomen to execute the task. The other day, after doing some weight lifting, my arms were so weak that while I was in the shower, I dropped my huge bottle of Aveda conditioner onto my foot and bruised myself (for real). My trainer was kind enough not to tell me my assessment score… but judging from my screaming muscles (I finally know what they mean by that!), I’m pretty sure it is close to 0. Looks like I have a long way to go………

On the plus side, to encourage myself in this new endeavor, I bought myself a lovely layered Adidas black tank with pink highlights, which is super chic!

Potato souffle

Did you know that if you follow the simple steps below, you can make potato souffle?

  1. Cut a potato in half, and slice thin pieces of potatoes (using a ham cutter machine if you’re professional, or a grater if you’re not)
  2. Towel the water off two slices
  3. Lightly swipe flour over the surface of one slice
  4. Place another slice on top of that and squeeze out any air in between
  5. Fashion the double potato slices into any shape you want using a knife or cookie cutter
  6. Squeeze the sides some more to make sure there are no “gaps”
  7. Fry the potato slice and watch it POP!
  8. Salt as necessary

20120817-125745.jpg

It’s ok, I didn’t know what it was at first either. Apparently they are fresh potato chips with air in the middle, puffed up like a souffle! They were the highlight of a recent cooking class I took, as my new friend and I went crazy cutting up different shapes (we rarely get the opportunity to exercise the creative side of our brains!). They make excellent plate decorations and in my opinion wonderful “fresh” snacks to go with drinks!

The rest of the class of slow cooking meat in a basin of oil, sifting sauce from a piece of cloth after a very lengthy process and trying to cut vegetable the “right” way without chopping off my fingers (hold your hands like they are claws!) was completely lost on me. I say, just put everything in a pot and boil it!

Summer fun

The problem with sales in Hong Kong is that they really try to push it to the last minute possible. They really don’t leave you much time to use your sales purchases before the next season comes along. Such is the case with my new Sofia di B yellow wedge sandals. There’s only a few more weeks of summer left before  I’ll have to retire them in favour of booties!

20120817-100224.jpg

But they were just sitting there on the sales table calling out to me. The design is simple, clean and easy to wear. And they were surprisingly comfortable when I tried it on! The straps are actually really well designed to support the ankles. At 60% off, they are also quite reasonably priced (though I’ve never heard of this brand and neither has Google, so I must assume it is a Harvey Nichols bred brand).

I did think about it for a week. Contemplating the versatility of yellow, and whether cork wedge looks cheap (as I’ve always thought so). My conclusion was that I love yellow anyway, and this shade can even pass off as a light off brown shade. I maintain that cork wedge looks cheap though, and this pair would be better served with a straw weaved wedge. But one cannot be overly picky during final sales (especially when the price is right), and this will be a great alternative to my summer flats, gladiators and strappy sandals!

Guys see this and get worried about the girls they pick up at clubs. I see this and think, wow everyone can be beautiful! But damn, I’m an amateur compared to these girls! Maybe it is time to start practicing more.

Princess shoes!

I originally went to the Miu Miu consignment at Lafayette to check out their new bow pumps. But then my eyes fell upon these Miu Miu embellished ballerinas with crystal heels and I immediately fell in love. Who wouldn’t? They are pink, they glitter, they sparkle and they have a pretty bow.  They completely appealed to my inner (or not so inner?) fairy tale princess!

20120816-144301.jpg

Initially I thought the crystal heels impractical, and imagined how heartbroken I’d be if they fell off (I’m not the most light-footed of people). But I haven’t been able to get them out of my mind since I saw my friend’s pair of bejeweled Miu Miu heels on a night out. They looked so glam and comfortable!

At one point, I did valiantly put them down and took a walk around the shoe floor to cool my head. They won’t exactly go with my edgy going out outfits, and they’re a bit too sparkly for casual wear. The sparkles are already falling off and I’d likely lose a crystal at some point.

But in the end, I couldn’t help but go back for them! They are just too pretty!! Now, all I need are some tulle skirts to complete my transformation! 😉
