Signature Serena Dresses

It was few episodes ago, but I still can’t get over how great S looked in this dress! I love the color. The fitted siloheutte and the assymetric sleeves is the epitome of this season’s style. And of course, S carries it off beautifully!

Gossip Girl- Serena- alexander wang1

Lo’ and behold, who is it by? Fashion’s golden boy, Alexander Wang!

S- catherine malandrino

Speaking of especially memorable Serena dresses, does anyone remember this one? I was so inspired by it, I bought my own version of it also by Catherine Malandrino. But then after wearing it once or twice, I sadly realized that I am simply no S and couldn’t quite carry off this kind of dress with aplomb. It is currently looking for a new owner on Ebay if anyone is interested. It would look especially good on you if your hair is not black.

I think I’m getting addicted to my Mia. I just love the feeling of the oscillating brushhead against my face. It makes me want to continuously use it to make sure that ALL the dirt is gone. It’s a good thing it automatically turns off after 1 minute! And of course, I love the feeling of clean and smoothness afterwards. Though nothing quite compares to how my skin feels after I use it when I’ve not used it for a few days or a week. That’s when you feel really really clean.

I’m happy to report that the crazy purging period seems to have passed. But alas, I’m still waiting for the promised land of clear and poreless skin. It seems that when one zit dies down then a new blocked pore suddenly surfaces and develops into a pimple. When will this purging end? Or should I just reduce to using it every few days instead? Maybe I’ll take a break from it over the Thanksgiving break. I could use the extra suitcase space for something else- I’m going to NYC! 🙂

  1. Examine your hair for split ends and cut them off. The next time you go get your hair done, your hairstylist will be amazed by your lack of split ends!
  2. Read random Wikipedia articles. Even if you’re doing nothing, at least you’re learning something. Kind of
  3. Read random new articles and blogs. Same as (2), knowledge is power and all that
  4. Write up your grocery list or list of chores. This way, you’ll at least be productive outside of work
  5. Reply emails to friends and gchat. Socializing is a very important part of life after all and in doing so, you can save other friends from boredom. Oh and on a side note, Google Wave is overrated. Give it a few more months to work out the bugs
  6. Play online reversi. Occasionally exercising your brain with something challenging will prevent it from rotting too quickly- even though I’m sure sometimes (esp on Tuesdays) you feel like your brain has already rotted
  7. Blog/Research for blogging. After all that other bloggers have done for you to occupy your time, you should reciprocate the gesture
  8. Learn something. Maybe today I’ll learn how to create/use pivot tables

What do you do when you procrastinate?

Zip Up!

The other day, while I was browsing through UO, I came across this dress at the back of the store and was immediately drawn to it. UO Dress

It is definitely not my usual style. This is much edgier than my feminine and girly norm. But the pencil skirt trend has grown on my lately, and I love the artsy pink floral print. The edgy zip gives the dress just the right amount of oomph to make an otherwise matronly dress look youthful and fun. I knew I had to have it!

Zip- UO

After that, I started seeing front zip skirts everywhere. There were more more versatile and casual versions of it at UO (above).

Zip- aqua

Dressier versions at Aqua. Incidentally, the purple dress on the left above? I left my phone inside the dress pocket when I was trying it on at Bloomingdales and I didn’t realize it until I got home that night. Luckily, I live super close to Bloomies and I got there just 15 minutes before it closed. They’d put the dress back on the rack, but luckily my phone was still inside it!

Zip- GG

And of course, on B at Gossip Girl. If the ultimate feminine and girly dresser is also wearing the zip up pencil skirt dress, then I must be heading in the right direction!

Clarasonic Diary: Week 2

My friends and I have had our Clarisonic Mia for 2 weeks now, and we’ve had mixed reviews. D has super sensitive skin. Her skin still felt raw a week after the first try using the delicate brush, and so she’s resolved to only use her Mia once a week as a scrub. J just moved to London and has forgotten about her Mia, but from the one week of devoted usage she had, she had no adverse effects. K has used it for over 2 weeks, reducing it to once a day recently to accomodate the drier weather, but she too has had no adverse effects. As for me, I believe I’m going through the ‘purging’ period.

One week after using it twice a day, I noticed small and large pimples surfacing on my forehead and cheeks that are not usually there. At that point, I was unsure of what to do because as much Clarisonic discussion as there have been online about this process, no one has specifically say what one should do about it. Do I stop using it, to prevent further irritation and spreading of bacteria? Or do i forge on, to conitnue with the purging process? In the end, caution won out and I stopped using it for the last week. I mean, what if the purging period never ends???????????? It’s like all the stuck pores on my cheeks all decided to surface at once!

So far, the large scary bumps are gone, but there are still a few small ones left to heal here and there. I’m planning to give it a break for another day or two, and start using Mia again on Monday. But only for once a day, because I think even my skin was feeling chafed by it. I use the sensitive brush, and it is definitely not as sensitive as it is marketed out to be. I hope this marks the end of the purging process….because I miss the baby smooth clean skin I had when I was using the Mia!!!

I wish the Mia came with guidelines on how to identify if you’re purging or just not suited to the product, and if you are purging, what you should do. So far, it’s been a lot of my own judgment call as a user and that frankly is kind of scary. I’ll let you know if the purging comes back next week!

The Clarisonic Debate

Clarisonic first got onto my radar when my friend told me that it was on her list of things to buy during the Sephora F&F sale last month (yes, I’m slow that way). At first I was resistant to use anything so extreme on my skin, since it was perfectly fine. Well not perfectly, but there wasn’t anything wrong with it and I didn’t want to mess up with the median. But then I eventually saw it everywhere, featured prominently on the Sephora website and in Michelle Phan videos etc. So I started my research. I figured if I was going to buy it, now was the time since it the F&F deal was really good, they were giving out two free brush heads worth $50 and it comes in this adorable pink color because of Cancer Awareness month!

 Clarisonic Mia

By the time I made it to Sephora (last week), I was a semi professional Clarisonic sales. As the lady explained the theory to my friends and I, I pitched in my insight and even the lady was impressed! Interesting things you need to know about the Clarisonic:

  • The Clarisonic can be used with any non-abrasive gentle skin cleanser such a Cetaphil
  • It uses a special technology to oscillate the brushhead to give your skin a deep cleansing, removing everything from the surface that should not be there. And yet, it is still gentle enough for daily use. This will allow for cleaner skin, smaller pores and allow products to sink in 6 times better. What more can a girl want?
  • There is a built in 1 minute timer, by which time it’ll stop, preventing you from over cleansing
  • You can kiss your exfoliator goodbye with your Mia
  • The brushhead is made of the best bristles money can buy (or so they say), which naturally reduces the chance of bacteria build up
  • According to the lady, the brushhead can technically be used forever if it didn’t get a bit battered. She suggests changing it every 4-5 months (contrary to the 3-4 months instruction on the box)
  • It is waterproof, so you won’t electrocute yourself even if you’re using it in the shower (the charger magnetically attaches itself to the Mia!)
  • The charger is universal and you need it charge it for 24 hours the first time around

Then the lady tried it out on our hands/face. Our skin felt so amazingly silky and smooth afterwards that all three of us were immedaitely SOLD!

On Ebay!

So after much encouragement and research, I’ve decided to try my hand at Ebay. I just put the brown Coach tote up on Ebay here. Since this is my first venture into Ebay, obviously I don’t have any ratings or Ebay credentials, so any support or just click-ages would be appreciated! 🙂

Ps. This is not turning into a commercial blog trying to sell things off to people. I simply want to make some space in my wardrobe and find a good home for my things. It hurts and feels extremely wasteful if I give them away. I just did a quick inventory and it’s scary how many black leather bags I have…………..

Keep or Sell?

05 Thursday Nov 2009

For a super indecisive person, I’ve made many difficult decisions lately. One of which is that I should really clean out my wardrobe of items that I haven’t used and will possibly never use again- even if they have sentimental value.

buyorsell- coach tote

This brown suede Coach tote with sequins for example. I got this during Thanksgiving at the Coach store in San Francisco my second year in college. I proceeded to use it daily for school until Spring when I switched to a more summery white Le Sportsac tote with gold lining. I possibly used it in my third year of college too. Then I got a black nylon Prada tote (which I’m still using!) and this proceeded to sit in my wardrobe waiting for another opportunity to come out, because seriously there’s nothing wrong with it. It’s in perfect condition and the style is not even that dated. Yet, it has been over 2 years and since then my collection of bags have only increased. I think it is time I let go. I even researched a good place to sell it at- Crossroads Trading . I won’t get anywhere near to what I paid for, but I am hoping it’ll at least buy me a meal (they give you 35% of what they sell it for).

buyorsell- rugby north america bag

The next item on my list is this leather messenger tote that totally fits into the old school preppy school theme. It’s from a brand called Rugby North America and it has sentimental value to me. But to be frank, I’ve only used it a few times and it has sat in my wardrobe for over 5 years since. I was just examining it and was newly impressed by its lining, zips and compartments. But let’s face it, I’m highly unlikely to be use it in the next 5 years.

buyorsell- burberry scarf 1

Then there is my purple Burberry cashmere scarf. This was my first Burberry/cashmere scarf and I remember being very excited and happy about it when I first got it in high school. There was a point when I’d wear it every single day and I even brought it with me to college. But alas, in the past few years, I’ve not worn it. Mostly because I’ve developed a taste for designs that are more subtle or “trendy” and there haven’t been much space for this girlhood classic. And honestly, I’m also afraid that I’d start feeling like what the Brits refer to as a chav if I wear it now. This will also fetch a very pretty penny (or so I hope!). But then again, it does have a lot of sentimental value to me (along with many other things). I’m on the fence with this one. Is it a sell or a keep?

Ps. This is not a comprehensive list of my sells. I’ve only just begun to take inventory and many have already been classified as a keeper regardless. i.e. my pink prom dress. I tried it on the other day and couldn’t believe how ridiculously old fashion I looked. And yet, when I bought it I could’ve sworn it was a classic!

I can feel the Manolo’s

manolo sample sale 2009

I’m not even in NYC but after much stalking I can feel the Manolo sample sale coming very very soon. So, I’ve prepared this list for my proxy to snag if she see’s any of them there for me, because I NEED a pair of Manolos!

Manolos 1

These will probably not be there, but I love love love these. I think I have an obsession with black peep toes. And aren’t those booties wicked?

I wouldn’t mind these in different colors: grey, pink, purple, beige, bronze, red, silver, navy blue. I’m just not a fan of prints/patterns/orange/light brown. Oh and no slingbacks please. I have too many and they’re not that comfy.

Manolos 2

More super gorgeous evening shoes I love. I think 3″ to 4″ is perfect. 4″ is probably the highest I can go without falling and anything under 2″ just seems like a waste of a Manolo (I hear it’s all about the arch!).

Manolos 3

And these are styles and colors that I don’t mind. As you can see, I’ve somehow gotten it into my head that I really want a pair of mary janes.

Oh and I’m a size 6. Thanks! 🙂

Lash Report

I peeled my fake lashes off last night, and I’m happy to report that my natural lashes are intact! Now I’m trying to wash off the glue because apparently contrary to what I originally thought, they are reusable!

I don’t have much to say about the application part though. In the end, I was running late so I had my friend do it for me. She was a veritable expert. She had it on in less than 10 seconds! I must say, they looked fabulous! And yes, this is my first time with fake lashes and that’s why I sound like a bumpkin.
