My friend A had a minor knee surgery the other day. Regardless of how minor it is however, he still needed to undergo general anesthesia (I mean, they are drilling a hole in his knee!).

He fancied that he could hobble his way home from the hospital immediately after the surgery and take care of himself. He even bought a whole boxful of ready made Nutrisystem food for his meals. Nevertheless, he still had to reluctantly enlist the help of me (to open the doors etc) and my friend (for the actual heavy lifting) to pick him up from the hospital, as otherwise the hospital wouldn’t release him. Does this remind anyone else of Sex and the City when Miranda had her lasik done?

He made it sound like a minor task- just come to the hospital and pick me up. It started out with pick me up at 9am, then to between 11-1.30pm. Factoring in the inefficiency of American hospitals, we arrived at 2pm and still had to wait another hour to see him. We walked through the complex maze of rooms and finally found him sitting there alone in a dentist chair, looking really out of it and really yellow. Like seriously yellow and it’s not just the bad lighting. At this point, you’d probably expect us to show our sympathies etc. But instead, we both considered whipping out our camera phones and taking a picture, but before we could put that into action, I burst out laughing and ruined the moment. He stirred in his chair and mumbled something we couldn’t understand. We giggled. He tried again, asking when he can leave. We looked at his condition and laughed some more. We only managed to pull ourselves together when the nurse came in to brief us. I know, very mature for two working twenty something year olds.

Baptiste Giabiconi

I mentioned him back in March in my FW09 Paris fashion week post on Chanel, but somehow last week I randomly got a lot of hits from him. I had no idea why, but it did get me curious enough to google Baptiste up some more. Seems like since March, he’s been even more in the spotlight, rising to become the number 1 in MDC’s Top 50 Male Models Of All Times Listing.

Baptiste 3

I don’t know much about male models, but I’m not surprised. With his dreamy dark and handsome looks, he looks like he just walked out of a regency romance. Throw in a charming and adorable personality (I don’t know a word of French, but I can just tell that he’s absolutely darling- and did you check out those abs???) and who can blame the fashion world for swooning?

Baptiste 2

I can totally see why Jerry Hall  looks so giddy here with Baptiste giving her such a sexy smothering look. Can you believe that Jerry Hall is 52 here and that Baptiste is only 19??? And he might look like a sexy Italian, but he’s actually born in France!

I don’t usually obsess over celebrities/models that much, but Baptiste is hard to resist. Karl has good eyes, picking him as his new muse. Learn more about Baptiste here!

Recession Sales Tactics

I came across an interesting article today on the WSJ on the Art of Selling an Expensive Watch. Granted I am not in the league for >$35,000 watches (and I imagine most of you are not either), I thought we could still all learn from the sales tactics taught in this article. After all, knowledge is power and some tactics are quite universal. The gist of it went like this:

  • Instead of asking a client a yes/no question like “Would you like to try it?”, where they can swiftly say no, invite the client to try it on, “I invite you to try the watch. Please take a seat.” – so next time someone tries this on you, don’t feel pressured to take the bate!
  • Lavish attention on clients coming in to service their watch, in order to rebuild brand loyalty- this tip works for me!
  • Say “value” rather than “price” and to sell “romance” rather than “products.”
  • The article talks about the “macaroon technique” where they sandwich the number in with romance i.e. “Madam, this timepiece (or diamond or handbag) comes from our finest workshop and it has a value of $10,000. If you buy it, your children are sure to enjoy it for generations to come.” –It’s all in how one words it! Sneaky
  • Flattery will get you anywhere. So they encourage sales associates to compliment the customer’s own watch even if they are from a competitor to build up positive emotions- !!! I’ve had this done on me before!! And it totally worked!
  • Don’t bargain with a client because the minute the client leaves, they forget the discount. Instead, offer them a gift to remember you by. – very clever! But I think I’d rather have the discount… it’s definitely more useful than another random cup!
  • Lay the client’s well worn watch in between two new shiny ones to subtly suggest that it’s time for an upgrade- hmm don’t think this applies to fashion items
  • Distract the wife-not to sell her another watch but just so she wouldn’t get bored and say, “let’s go.” The longer they stay the better – I think sales associates have tried to distract me this way while my mom is shopping! It works too and creates a lot more goodwill
  • They’ve also discovered that men buy more when their other half is not around and have created men’s only sales events. They even suggest, “sorry gifts” of another time piece for husbands to appease their wives who might be mad about their big splurge- I agree, guys are in general such unsavvy shoppers. They are never patient enough to wait for the sales or bargain. Not so sure how effective the “sorry gift” idea is though… they’re trying to get you to apologize for splurging by splurging even more?

So watch out for these tricks next time you shop!

I saw Mariah Carey…..

….except I didn’t recognize her. She walked right past me and all I saw was that she was really made up, had gorgeous hair and a really hot body. But her body guards/assistants, the heavy filming equipment and the myriad fans outside made me think that that I should really know who this is. Finally I asked the hotel staff and they clued me in that it was Mariah Carey, filming her latest mv- Obsession. The crazy fans and the extravagant set finally made sense after that.

DSC04846

Personally I’ve never been a big fan of her’s (I would’ve been more excited spotting the filming of Gossip Girl), but it was a good NYC experience nevertheless. On this trip I also tried Craft Steak and Megu. Craft Steak not that great. The steak were overly seasoned/salty, and the steak itself was very dry. I guess this is what happens when all the cow gets to eat is grass. I loved Megu though. It was just my kind of cooked Japanese food place. If you don’t have anywhere to go to last minute, I recommend Megu Midtown. Located at the Trump Tower next to the UN, there was almost nobody there. Yet the food and the service were both excellent. Love love love.

Other random thoughts……. when my friend told me last Thursday that “MJ is dead” I immediately thought of Marc Jacobs and immediately felt really devastated! But then I realized that my friend cannot possibly know who Marc Jacobs is (or if he did, he wouldn’t call him MJ), I googled it up to find that it was actually Michael Jackson. I feel bad to admit it, but I think I actually felt a little relieved it was Michael and not Marc. Marc still has a long way to go to reach his full potential!

Yay, everyone is leaving early today! I’m off to catch my flight to SD. Happy 4th of July everyone!

Blogged Out?

Today I came across a sobering article in the NYTimes about the decline of blogs. It was actually quite refreshing since this is the first article I’ve read from this angle. Ever since I started blogging 5 years ago, the hype of blogging had just grown exponentially, but I guess like the economy, it grew out of proportion and now the blog bubble is deflating too. The article suggested that many people started blogs with lofty aspirations — to build an audience and leave their day job, to land a book deal, or simply to share their genius with the world, but then were eventually disappointed or lost interest and decided to stop. It cited examples of the regular mom, Mrs. Nichols, trying to make it without success, and successful bloggers like Cromulent/Salad Days, who temporarily quit from the lack of privacy and fashion blogger, Fashion Robot, who just had enough. My first reaction was to commiserate with Fashion Robot- I’m not alone! My second thought was that a decline sounds right. I don’t know about the rest of the blogosphere, but for me the fashion blogosphere grew so fast in the past few years that I’ve lost track a long time ago. I know that it should be the more the merrier, but a reader only has so much time in a day and they must use it wisely- the exponential growth was unsustainable.

The problem is that people started blogging for the wrong reasons. As with every job, only the fittest survive. You cannot expect to register for a blog, randomly write something and expect instant readership/revenue and an upcoming book deal. You must have something to offer to readers, network in the blogosphere and be consistent and constantly refreshing to build a readership. Trust me, it is no easy task. The most successful bloggers are those who are most passionate about what they write. If you get into blogging with the mindset to simply share your thoughts with other like-minded people rather than notoriety and cash, you’ll have a much better time of it.

Lacroix files for Bankruptcy

Christian Lacroix is not exactly one of my favourite designers. His style is a bit too…. colorful for me. Nevertheless, it is one of the last Paris haute couture houses established under the formal couture rules. It represents a generation of glamour and exquisite craftsmanship in fashion not seen these days. So it is rather sad to hear that they filed for bankruptcy today.

Though I cannot say I’m surprised. His collection is not always the most easy to wear and I’m sure that business from their haute couture clientele is not as it used to be. Besides, we all know that the real money in fashion is in the more commercial, lower price point products like perfumes and accessories. And from what I can tell as a fellow mass market consumer, they haven’t been very successful in their foray into  the commercial market- if indeed there had been any.

While there is going to be change though, this doesn’t mean the end. They’re still hoping to do a small presentation in the July couture season. An expensive and completely unprofitably endeaver, but I’m sure that it is at least 1/3 of the way done anyway- so they might as well finish it. Though right now, the court still needs to decide whether to liquidate their assets or restructure it. For more details, check out the full article here.

The article also talked about how the luxury pyramid model for fashion is no longer viable and that the current strategy is more of a sunburst around a designer, a la Armani. I’m not sure that this is completely correct though. I still think there is still some kind of pyramid in the business model. Maybe the tip has been blunted a bit, but you still need to have the original Marc Jacobs line before you have the Marc by Marc Jacobs line for the younger crowd. And you still need Marc by Marc Jacobs to fuel the more wallet friendly Jacobs by Marc Jacobs line. Each collection down the product line serves a wider audience…. like a pyramid, no? Or does it all just  revolve around Marc Jacobs?

Thoughts? I haven’t completely wrapped myself around this idea yet myself!

To the Goddess of Shoes

I’ve been your fateful follower ever since I stepped into my very first pair of  Miu Miu’s. There is just something so magical about the right shoes that completely transforms an outfit into something fabulous and brings a smile to my face. Like the golden reef on your head, I can wear them everyday and people will never wonder if I ever clean them (unlike wearing the same apparel everyday). FYI though, I do clean my shoes and use Apple Gardes to shield them as much as possible from the harsh pavements of Chicago. I spend quality time with them at home too, doing fun things like girly chats, impromptu fashion shows and photoshoots. The photos are archived in my laptop under the file, “Shoe Collection.” In my free time, I research shoes on sites like Shopbop and Saks.com, to make sure that I’m up to date with the latest shoe sermons.

Clearly I am a devout follower of shoes. So why, oh mighty Goddess of Shoes, why am I not in NYC right now, at the Mecca of shoe worship- the Christian Louboutin sample sale? Why am I not one of the few select fashion editors and friends on the list? What must I do to gain that coveted place in your heart to be allowed entry? Please give me a sign!

Yours Faithfully,

Bulls vs Celtics: Game 6

The other night, I went to my first NBA game (even though I’ve been around in Chicago for over 4 years). From all records, we picked a very good game to watch. I believe it was a playoff game, the 6th in the series between the Chicago Bulls and the Boston Celtics. In English, it means the two teams play 7 games, and whoever wins 4 games first gets to move onto the next round. In game 5, the bulls lost, which meant that they must win game 6 in order to move on.i.e. this was a big game!

dsc04616

I must say, I enjoy watching basketball muchbetter than baseball. In the last 2 White Sox games I went to, we took a picture and left. I lasted through the entire 3.5 hours of this game, and there weren’t too many dull moments! To begin with, it is a much simpler sport to understand, with a much faster pace, that even an amateur like me can appreciate. More importantly though, with 95% of the stadium in red, the atmosphere was thrilling. I was surprised at how blatantly the audience and the stadium put down the other team, it doesn’t seem like a very nice/hospitable/good sport thing to do, but I suspecgt it is part of the charm of watching basketball- we all get a chance to let our inner high schoolers out. The scoreboards very creatively cheered the Bull’s on and called for defense when the Celtics attacked. The  audience too cheered the bulls and unabashedly boo-ed the Celtics, with the audience sitting directly behind the Celtic’s goal frantically waving shiny distractions whenever the Celtics had a penalty shot, in the hopes that they’ll miss. I especially enjoyed the half sober audience in my section, chanting things like, “Celtics sucks!”, I haven’t heard that in a long time! I would like to thank the one lone Celtic fan in my section, dressed in green, for providing me with such entertainment, as the people around shouted obscenities and threw fries at you. Yes, I take joy in other people’s misfortunes.

The game itself was pretty exciting. It was a super close call, with triple over time! At one point towards in the last quarter, the Celtics were winning, but then the Bulls swiftly caught up and pushed pass 100 points (yay, free Big Mac for us!) and they were tied. Then every time we thought the Bulls were going to win, the Celtics miraculously caught up (they hold up very well under pressure!). It’s amazing how 20 seconds in a game could matter so much in a game. I definitely got my money’s worth in terms of excitement, intensity and length of game. In fact, I personally thought it was a bit too long. After the second O.T, the boy who cried wolf came to mind. You keep on thinking this is it and you get all hyped up, but then the Celts catch up and you get another5 minutes. And it’s not just 5 minutes, no. Both sides kept on calling Time Outs, that the Love-a-Bulls cheerleaders were getting not so loveable. Finally the Bulls won by one point and all was well. It was straight out of a movie, where they struggle behind, but finally prevail in the end.

I also thoroughly enjoyed the entertainments in between the game. The tic-tac-toe, the doughnut race (too bad my donut came up short!), the people jumping on trampolines shooting hoops, the magicians who had a million different outfits (they must get ready reallyquickly in the morning), the plastic container drummers (even though I think they’re more impressive on the streets) and the parachuting tshirts. I’m by no means now a basketball fan, I’d still prefer a DVF sample sale any day, but it was definitely more fun than baseball.

Go Bulls tonight!

2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa

At the persuasion of a friend, I bidded for 2010 FIFA World Cup tickets back in March. It was the first phase of ticket sales, and tickets are selected on a lottery basis. I figured that I’d have nothing to lose. In the unlikely chance that I get good tickets, I can just resell them and earn a hefty profit on Ebay. It is the World Cup after all, the number one sport everywhere besides the US. There are bound to be lots of wealthy individuals eager for some good tickets. And if I do happen to get finals tickets…. well maybe then I’d consider trekking all the way to South Africa. As luck would have it….

Product Category No of Tickets Status Amount to Pay
Match 60, QF – W55 v W56 – 3 July, Johannesburg 20.30 CAT1 4 Successful 1,200.00
Match 58, QF – W49 v W50 – 2 July, Johannesburg 20.30 CAT1 4 Successful 1,200.00
Match 56, R16 – 1H v 2G – 29 June, Cape Town 20.30 CAT1 4 Successful 800.00
Match 62, SF – W59 v W60 – 7 July, Durban 20.30 CAT1 4 Successful 2,400.00

…. I did get pretty decent tickets. Out of the 7 requests I could make, I got 4 of them. I didn’t get the finals, but I did get 4 first class tickets to see the semi finals. And another 8 to see the quarter finals. That’s pretty good!

In case you’re wondering though, no, I have not forked out $5600 for these yet. Now that I have them, all my daydreaming about reselling them for a ridiculous amount has become a possibility and I’m chickening out. I’m getting worried about the reselling policies. I don’t want to fork out $5600 right now, just in case I can’t resell them (I don’t like soccer that much). Also, what if no one WANTS it? It IS the recession and it IS in South Africa. I’m sure that it is very civilized there now and they will clean it up even more before the World Cup (just like they did in Beijing), but still it’s hard to get the image of the apartheid and the stories you’ve heard over the years out of your head. I don’t mean to be small minded, but I’m sure I’m not the only one thinking this…….. which will definitely affect the resell value! And I checked, I don’t think I can just buy the semi final tickets. I have to buy them all. What to do…

I wonder why I’m  “lucky” enough to get a bunch of World Cup tickets and yet I’ve never gotten even one number in the lottery.

You Are What You Wear

Browsing through the Definitive Book of Body Language, I came across an interesting section: The Power of Glasses and Makeup. They conducted an experiment with 4 sales lady, where one wore make-up, one wore glasses, one wore both and one wore none, and observed customer impression of them. They concluded that make-up gives woman a more intelligent, confident and sexier image and the combination of glasses and makeup in business has the most positive and memorable impact on observers.

Obviously I know (and whole heartedly agree) with the part about make-up/looking good gives a women confidence, but I hadn’t really thought about it in terms of being taken more seriously in a work environment. I would’ve thought that the girl with the glasses and no make-up would be taken more seriously, because she’d be percieved as nerdy and too serious to care about the way she looks. But now that I think of it, my image of a business power woman does involve a YSL suit, stilettos, a Birkin bag and the perfect make-up. Nikko from Lipstick Jungle (oh how I mourn that show!) also comes to mind. This idea was further confirmed today, when I came across the Dress Code for Hedge-Fund Women article in the WSJ, where they mused that looking the part may actually give them an edge in the work place.

I must admit though that I have not been looking the part and putting on make-up everyday to work. I used to at the beginning, but then the casual and laidback company culture and lack of dress code kicked in and I stopped trying so hard (I need to get in as much zz’s as I can in the morning!). It’s kind of nice to be able to cling onto remnants of the good ol’ college days. Maybe it is time I started again though. Even though I’m not up to the business power woman level yet, I should at least start looking the part. You got to fake it until you make it after all, right?
